Graduate Studies Research Council Approves Student Degree Awards, Requires Scientific Paper Publication Before Thesis Defense

The Graduate Studies College Research Council at Imam Mahdi University approved a number of academic decisions aimed at advancing scientific research and enhancing the quality of graduate programs during its second meeting of 2026, held at noon today. The meeting was chaired by the University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohamed Bukhari.

The meeting was attended by the University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Nour El Din El Tahir, the Dean of the Graduate Studies College, Dr. Waleed Ali Abu Shoura, as well as the deans of the various colleges and deanships, in addition to members of the Research Council.

The Council approved the awarding of academic degrees to 32 students enrolled in the PhD, Master's, and Higher Diploma programs after they had fulfilled all academic requirements in accordance with the regulations governing graduate studies.

As part of its efforts to strengthen the research system, the Council adopted a decision requiring that a scientific paper be either published or officially accepted for publication as a prerequisite for allowing a student to defend their thesis or dissertation. The existing requirement that the paper must ultimately be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal remains a condition for the conferral of the academic degree.

The Council also discussed a number of issues related to the development of graduate programs and adopted several recommendations and decisions intended to improve academic performance and scientific research in line with quality assurance standards and excellence in higher education.
